AI/ML Software and Applications
No software classification is perfect. Here AI/ML software and applications are divided into code libraries and development environments, desktop and web-based software packages with GUI interfaces, and web-based viewers onto AI/ML generated products. Code libraries and development environments provide the widest functionality but require programming knowledge. GUI-based software do not require programming but often support limited functionality aimed at a specific set of problems, e.g. image classification. Web-based viewers provide accessible means of accessing AI/ML products. Some software and data are free and open but there are many proprietary solutions that cost and the details of which may be commercial secrets.
In this rapidly moving environment any list of software a is out of date as soon as it is written down, nevertheless they provide an ‘overview of the landscape’ with which to start.

Large language models
Various LLMs are available each of which has advantages and disadvantages. LLMs are often trained on vast quantities of general purpose data resulting in bias, inconsistency, and and lack of domain-specific knowledge or cultural awareness. For example, generative chatbots have been accused of greenwashing fossil fuel companies role in climate change (Global Witness, 2025). These issues are addressed through ‘fine-tuning’ (additional language training with domain specific information) and ‘grounding’ (truthing against external knowledge sources including databases and knowledge graphs). Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) is the primary technique for grounding. Ultimately, all chatbot output should be ‘fact checked’.
LLM comparisons include:
- AI-Pro A Comprehensive Comparison of All LLMs (2024).
- mindsdb A Comparative Analysis of Leading Large Language Models (2025).
- lmarena Leaderboard compares how leading models stack up across text, image, vision, and beyond.
- Celik, et al. (2025) – Comparison of Large Language Models (LLM). UAKK 2024 The International Open Source Conference.
LLM output depends on the input ‘prompt’. Prompt engineering is the art of writing a prompt to to obtain the most appropriate output, and to better understand the capabilities and limitations of large language models. While prompt engineering will help you get the best out an LLM, but their ‘best’ must be checked for accuracy and may not be sufficient to meet use needs. For example, “Not long ago it seemed that ‘prompt engineering’ would replace CS [computer scientists]. Today, however, there are virtually no job postings for prompt engineers, while companies like LinkedIn report that the responsibilities of CS professionals have actually expanded.” (Sidu, The Conversation 2025).
For academic and research purposes you are probably better using an LLM ‘tuned’ to scientific and humanities ‘norms’, for example, one that is trained on domain specific information prioritises grounding, and limits hallucination. Specialist LLM include:
- Erasmus.ai ClimateGPT (Thulke, D. et al. 2024) is designed to enhance human decision making by offering robust climate information to researchers, policymakers, and business leaders.

AI Data and models
The data that is input into AI/ML is the same as might be used in conventional systems, but the volume of data required to train, test, and verify models are often larger and may be more varied than used in conventional systems. AL/ML outputs are highly variable and, as discussed earlier, may be highly predictive but lack understandable explanation.
It is estimated that more than 400 petabytes of data area generated everyday yet it can still be difficult to locate, access, and clean the data required for a specific project, so you may either have to collect it yourself or fit the project to available data. Data may be downloaded from government and scientific repositories or accessed through systems supplied by companies such as Google, Microsoft and ESRI, e.g. via Google Earth Engine, but there are also repositories of data pre-prepared for AI/ML model development. These are a few datasets I found that have been compiled for AI training.
